Me and My Club
with Kieren Standley
Town fan and DJ Kieren Standley discusses his favourite Town player, goal and more.
How did you become a Town fan?
I was born in Ipswich but didn't move back to the town from Colchester until I was 9. My school then offered tickets to kids and their parents for a few games during the season, so my step dad took me to my first game and I've been a Town fan ever since.
First Town game. Year/team/score/ground?
My first Town game was against Gillingham at Portman Road in November 2003. The game finished 4-3 to Gillingham so although it was a shame to see Town lose , at least i got to see a 7 goal thriller!
Favourite Town player of all time and why?
My favourite ever Town player was probably Shefki Kuqi. He was a goalscoring beast and of course the fans used to love the swan dive celebration!
Worst moment as a Town Fan?
My worst moment as a Town fan was probably experiencing the diabolical 5-1 home defeat to Norwich in 2011. That was 90 minutes of hell.
Favourite Town goal ever and why?
My favourite ever Town goal has to be Pablo Counago's 97th minute lob against Coventry in 2010. The composure he showed and the crowd reaction was out of this world.
Best Ipswich Town captain of all time and why?
Best Ipswich captain for me is Luke Chambers. Unfortunately I haven't seen many of the club's historic captains so i can't compare them really, but the passion that Chambers has not just for the fans but football and the club in general is something other football captains should take on board and aspire to be like.
Favourite piece of Town memorabilia is?
I don't really have much memorabilia to be honest but i have a few signed shirts etc. so that's it unfortunately.
Greatest Town game you have watched & why?
Greatest Town game I have ever watched was the 5-1 win over West Ham in January 2012. Still to this day I have not seen a better performance than that in all my years of watching Ipswich. What made it even better was the fact my cousin came with me to the game and he's a West Ham fan. Fun times.
Who is your favourite Town manager and why?
My favourite Town manager since I've been a Town fan has to be Mick McCarthy but i'd also like to mention the fantastic job that Joe Royle did for the club. It's also a shame that I never got to see the legends like Sir Alf and Sir Bobby manage Town but I have nothing but respect for what they achieved here.
Most memorable Town moment as a fan of Ipswich and why?
The most memorable Town moment for me is probably Town beating Arsenal 1-0 in 2011. Unfortunately I wasn't able to make the game as I was still out in Australia but i still remember waking up the following morning and seeing the result , I couldn't believe my eyes! It was a fantastic achievement for a Town team who were without a manager at the time and had a very inferior squad compared to Arsenal.
