Me and My Club
with Isabel Minter
Pruducer at talkSPORT and Town fan Isabel Minter discusses her first Town game, favourite Town goal and more.
How did you become a Town fan?
I grew up near Ipswich so they were my local club.
First Town game. Year/team/score/ground?
My dad took me to my first ever football game when I was 13. It was at Portman Road back in 2002 when we beat Tottenham 2-1, Marcus Bent and John McGreal scored the goals (think they were both headers)
Favourite Town player of all time and why?
It’s a difficult one as I have had a few favourite players over the years but I’m going to pick Jim Magilton. His eye for a pass, the way he could change a game and his enthusiasm for the game was a joy to watch.
Worst moment as a Town Fan?
Probably when we lost 7-1 to Peterborough. I work with Adrian Durham (talkSPORT presenter) who is a Posh fan and the game was on in the office whilst we were both working. I over celebrated Keith Andrews opener and let’s just say by half time I was hiding in one of the off air studio’s doing ‘work’ to avoid further ridicule from Durham.
My other worst moment would be having to witness Ipswich lose 5-1 in the Derby!
Favourite Town goal ever and why?
Fabian Wilnis goal against Norwich at Carrow Road.
I was listening to the game on the radio and went crazy when he scored that goal, I even did a knee slide celebration in the sitting room! It was a great strike and was setup nicely by Dean Bowditch on his debut.
Best Ipswich Town captain of all time and why?
I’m going to pick Jim Magilton again – great leader on and off the pitch and epitomised what the club was about.
Favourite piece of Town memorabilia is?
My brother used to work in the club shop and he got Jamie Clapham to sign a teddy bear for me.
Greatest Town game you have watched & why?
The one that always stands out for me is when we beat Sheffield United 3-2 at Portman Road. Counago got sent off after about 20 minutes, we were 2-0 down by halftime and but hit back with 3 second half goals from the two Darren’s (Bent and Ambrose) and won the game. The atmosphere at Portman Road was amazing that day.
Who is your favourite Town manager and why?
I wish I had been alive when Sir Bobby Robson was in charge, what he did for our club was remarkable, through work I have been lucky enough to meet people who have played for him and the respect they have for him is incredible.
Most memorable Town moment as a fan of Ipswich and why?
Too many to choose from but from a personal point of view when we beat Arsenal 1-0 at home in the League Cup a few years back.
It was November, and freezing cold, but the travelling Blue Army was magnificent. Hreidarsson and a double for Marcus Stewart. And the Swedes were such cracking hosts, even after losing. I work with a lot of Gooners and they were giving me a lot of stick before the game telling me they were going to absolutely thrash us, so it was a great feeling to get that win.
Unfortunately we couldn’t beat them in the return leg but to get the chance to watch Ipswich, along with 9,000 Blues, at the Emirates was pretty special.
