new squad numbers ANNOUNCED

With the start of the 2017/18 championship campaign just around the corner Ipswich town have released the squad numbers the players will wear for the upcoming season.
But it seems Downes has kicked on further during this preseason going up another level, impressing further after featuring in towns convincing 5-0 victory over Drogheda in Ireland, Mick mentioned “I think he’ll contribute this season”. Further describing his recent performance in the 3-1 win over Peterborough as “excellent”. Soon after rewarding the tenacious midfielder with a three year deal at Portman Road, which really shows the faith McCarthy must have him.
The last town player I recall receiving such high praise from Mick was a certain 18 year-old Teddy Bishop who broke onto the scene during the 2014/15 season, making a real impact in the town midfield, helping Ipswich to a 6th place finish that year. The question on many town fans lips is whether Downes can have a similar impact this season to what a young Teddy did just 3 seasons ago.
However this will be made more difficult with the recent additions of box to box midfielder Tom Adeyemi joining on a free transfer after scoring 7 times from midfield for a struggling Rotherham side, and the signing of last seasons “fans favourite” Emyr Huws joining permanently from Cardiff for an undisclosed fee, hopefully adding more much needed goals to towns midfield.
The emergence of the highly rated son of Jason, Andre Dozzell who recently arrived back to training with Ipswich after being part of the England under 19 European championship winning side this summer, as well as the highly praised, central midfielder Tristan Nydam who like Flynn Downes has also impressed during preseason. These additions, I’m sure will be like a breath of fresh air for towns midfield adding much needed competition for senior pros Cole Skuse, a rehabbing Luke Hyam, Teddy Bishop who still has a point to prove and also Grant Ward who shone when operating in a midfield 3 towards the back end of last season.
With Flynn penning a new 3 year deal, Downes has made it clear he is keen to now push on into the first team after seeing other academy products break into the first team last season, “"It's encouraging to see others come through and play for the first-team so it has pushed me on even more because I want to get to that level."
Hopefully Flynn Downes can make real impact over the next few seasons and cement his place in the Ipswich midfield, after showing promising early signs in a blue shirt, impressing manager Mick McCarthy and his staff through preseason who I’m sure will now have a selection headache come august come august 5th when town meet Birmingham for the first game of the 2017/18 season. Hopefully the start of something special.
