Ipswich dominated the game from the start, with New Zealand international Monty Patterson causing the Seedgrower’s defence many problems. Shortly after Town’s defence was tested on the counter attack by Coggeshall’s number 9 who blasted wide on the 10th minute mark. Gerard Nash’s side responded brightly however with Patterson dancing past various defenders before eventually hitting an audacious chip just past the far post. 31 minutes in, Coggeshall managed to finally get one past Nick Hayes as an over hit corner was headed back into the six yard box and impressive fullback Josce Syrett bundled the ball into the net.
A potentially frustrating first half was cancelled for Ipswich as Jack Lankester managed to get one back for the Tractor Boys just before halftime as he eloquently chipped a shot over the home side’s keeper, a much deserved goal as Ipswich had completely dominated the game throughout the first 45 minutes.
Surprisingly, Nash made no changes at halftime with the pace of the game not changing either as Patterson once again created some space for himself and hit a powerful shot into the legs of a defending Coggeshall player. 5 minutes into the half, Monty Patterson found himself involved in another chance as he slipped a perfectly timed through ball to goalscorer Jack Lankester who was able to round the goalkeeper and dink a shot onto the post of the oppositions goal, the chance wouldn’t of counted however as the linesman flagged for offside.
As the fans expected, Gerard Nash finally decided to fully rotate the outfield team on the 57th minute which allowed the few Ipswich fans to see some of the new first year scholars. Soon after the changes, Ben Folami found himself on the scoresheet as he composedly tucked away an Albert Wilton cross to put the away side in front and ultimately win the game for the boys in blue.
The result allows Town to progress in their preseason schedule and the exciting; possession dominating football hopefully may reflect the kind of football the U23’s will be playing next season.
