Me and My Club
with Anthony Steele
Town fan Anthony Steele discusses his worst Town moment, greatest Town game and more.
How did you become a Town fan?
Way back in the late 1970s / early 1980s, my parents bought me a holdall to carry my books and packed lunch to school in. Neither of them have any interest in football, but for some reason, they'd picked an Ipswich Town one. This was the era when Town were one of the best teams in Europe, and a lot of my school friends were also becoming Town fans, so there was also a bit of a glory-hunting element to it as well!
First Town game. Year/team/score/ground?
My Uncle took me to watch Ipswich play Aston Villa at Portman Road in April 1983. Town lost 2-1, but I was hooked.
Favourite Town player of all time and why?
So many players to choose from, but I'd have to say that my favourite Town player of all time has to be John Wark. For a defensive midfield player, he had a phenomenal strike rate. I missed out on seeing him play when he was in his prime under Bobby Robson, but saw some brilliant displays after he rejoined us in the late 80s and after he moved back to centre-half in the 90s.
Worst moment as a Town Fan?
The worst moment, unsurprisingly, involves that lot from up the A140. It doesn't get worse than leaving Portman Road after being tonked 5-1 by your rivals.
Favourite Town goal ever and why?
My favourite Town goal has to be Martijn Reuser in the play-off final at Wembley. Just the sheer joy of knowing we were going to be playing in the Premier League the following season.
Best Ipswich Town captain of all time and why?
The best Town captain of all time has to be Mick Mills, the man who captained us during the glory years under Sir Bobby. Although in my time since I started going to games on a regular basis, it would have to be Matt Holland. A great leader on the pitch who has a genuine love of the club.
Favourite piece of Town memorabilia is?
I have a framed picture of John Wark scoring in the UEFA Cup Final in 1981 on my wall, signed by the man himself.
Greatest Town game you have watched & why?
It's probably been said many times before, but it has to be the play-off final. An emotional rollercoaster of a match, but one of the greatest days of my life. There's nothing quite like seeing your team win at Wembley.
Who is your favourite Town manager and why?
A tough one. Probably Sir Bobby Robson, as he brought us the successful times in the league and in Europe during the 70s and the start of the 80s using mostly home-grown players, but Sir Alf Ramsey has to get a special mention, taking a newly-promoted side that was one of the favourites for relegation at the start of the 1961/62 season to the League Championship.
Most memorable Town moment as a fan of Ipswich and why?
Again, it would have to be the joy I felt when the final whistle blew in the play-off final at Wembley in 2000.
Memories that will stay with me until the day I die.
